About the story

Ultrastellar is a kid-friendly adventure comic about being overwhelmed by change…

…and finding
your own space!

After his father’s sudden death, 12-year-old Trevor Campbell is overwhelmed with change. He copes by escaping – into comic books, cardboard forts, even meditation.

But when things go bad, he runs back to his old treefort, to take comfort in a familiar place… only to end up stuck in another dimension!

The Ultrastellar
is a bizarre world
full of strange encounters.

And yet, it might just give Trevor what he needs to face the conflicts back home!

About me

I’m Paul Sloboda, and I’m the creator of this story & this website! I say more about both of those here on the blog.

I’ve been an illustrator, animator, commercial director, and motion graphics designer… but alongside all of those roles, I’ve been a comics creator. Ever since I was a preschooler, learning to read from Tintin comics and Peanuts strips, I’ve written, drawn, inked, lettered & colored my own comic stories. They weren’t very good, but I made them real!

Once I became a dad and started reading with my son, I wanted to create the kind of story that a kid might enjoy, and find special… something carrying the magic and wonder I found in the comics from my youth. Ultrastellar is that story, told to the best of my ability.

Over the years I’ve occasionally called myself a comics “publisher”, as well… selling my self-published minicomics at bookstores and conventions across North America. As of now, as of this website, I’ve become a publisher again — putting Ultrastellar out into the world, for people to follow. My hope is to grow its audience large enough so I can complete the story through a physical copy.

About Book 1

As some of you probably know, I’ve previously collected the first part of Ultrastellar — its first 92 pages, along with some behind-the-scenes bonus material — as Ultrastellar, Book 1: Escape. That book was a limited-run printing meant for sale at personal appearances and comic conventions. There aren’t many copies of it left, and once those remaining copies are sold, I’m not sure that first book will be reprinted in that form. However: if I still have copies remaining once my online store is in place, I’ll certainly make those copies available for sale!
